A rather risky new proposal shook the very foundations of the Greek International Fur Fair, worldwide known as Kastorian Fur Fair. The proposal was about moving the Fair from its original place, Kastoria and take it to the city of Thessaloniki. The reasons for something like that are many. Thessaloniki is the second biggest city in Greece, populated from more than one million citizens. It is supposed to be the center of the Balkans, therefore it could offer maximum exposure to the event and gather even more visitors. However, Kastoria is the Fur capital of Greece, and for some the Fur capital of the world. All Greek furs are manufactured in Kastoria and a city near called Siatista. Plus, the Fair has always been a vital event for the economy and life of Kastoria, that is now a great touristic place but still has got a big unemployment issues (the biggest in whole Greece).
The final decision was taken after the meeting of Greek Fur Association members. The voting took place on Thursday 6th of June 2006. The result of the voting was : - 52 votes in favor of staying in Kastoria
- 25 in favor is moving to Thessaloniki
- 1 white (blank) vote.
So, the next Fur Fair would be hosted again in Kastoria and the Edika building after all. If it is for the best, time will tell. |
